The Moree Branch, along with 400 other CWA branches in NSW, (with a membership of 9000 members), is shining a light on the issue of domestic violence in regional and remote communities, and the impact this is having on victims and their children.
This year, the Country Women’s Association is partnering with Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia, to raise funds which will help ensure that every call for help is answered.
Last year, Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia answered 55,000 calls for help. However, during this period, over 18,000 attempts to access help went unanswered, because counsellors were already engaged with other clients.
For those contacting for the first time, not being able to speak to a counsellor, or being asked to leave a message can be quite distressing. One can never be sure whether they ever ring back! Funds raised by the CWA this year will help answer every call.
In addition to our main focus, CWA of NSW is also supporting a separate motion to encourage members and the community to register for organ donation. It only takes a brief conversation regarding each other’s intention within the family, which can save someone’s life.
The CWA itself was formed out of a desperate need. Country women were fighting isolation and an appalling lack of health facilities and the constraints of a male dominated society.
These women realised they had nowhere else to turn but themselves and the result was staggering! Within a year the Association was a unified, resourceful group that was going from strength to strength.
The CWA members come from all walks of life, living both in the country and the city. They share a commitment to continue improving the lives of women.
The aims of the not for profit organisation are many, consisting of supporting initiatives that enhance the conditions and welfare of women; consulting different levels of government on a variety of issues affecting agriculture and the environment, education, health, transport and telecommunications , as well as bringing women and families together to form a network of friendship and support.
