The answer is, there isn’t one and that’s why the Moree Race Club Committee encourages families from around the region to celebrate Father’s Day at the races.

Secretary, Michelle Gobbert, said the club hope to host about 500 to 600 people on Sunday.

“We have so much going on throughout the day to entertain Dad and the whole family. We’ve also received many nominations for all eight races so it should be a fantastic, warm event,” she said.

This year’s fashions on the field will include more than $2500 worth of prizes to be won by the whole family.

“We have focused on the fashions on the field prizes for dads and there are more opportunities for all men to enter and be involved.

Although, we still have lovely prizes for the ladies and in particular the best dressed couple on the day will win two return airfares to Sydney,” Gobbert said.

Fashions on the field will be judged and announced around 3.30pm.

Another special and new initiative to the track will include a trackside bar.

“The bar specifically focuses on international and craft beers. The bar is open to anyone over 18 and tickets can be purchased on the gate or online,” she said.

On the topic of new, Gobbert mentioned the special Dad’s Day Out, ‘behind the scenes’ Package run as a competition through the Moree Champion.

“So we asked Dad’s to enter the special behind the scenes to the day which included entry and race book, seeing the horses jump from the barriers, be there for a live race call, viewing a race from the judges box, spending time with a trainer, food, drinks and TAB vouchers and much more.

“The winner was Jimmy (James) Bryans so he’ll get a special view of the day and will also present the Moree Cup on behalf of QantasLink as they were unable to have a representative at the races,” Gobbert explained.

Local children have already been colouring in preparation for the competition being run throughout the day; the sheets have been handed out through McDonalds and can also be found on the club’s website and Facebook page.

“There will be copies on the day and the winner will be announced later. Also we will have face painting and Greg Berger will be there to make his snow cones,” she said. 

More than 23 horses were nominated just for the Moree Cup, included in the list was local trainers Peter Sinclair with Arawak and Planetarium, and Peter Blanch with Kyogle Town which was also nominated in the Benchmark 60 (1200 metres).

“We’ve got a lot of double nominations, including from our local trainers Peter Sinclair and Nathan Sinclair with Long Lasting. We have a $10, 000 trainer’s bonus which has drawn a lot of outside interest and if it doesn’t go off we have a guaranteed $1000 bonus,” Gobbert said.

Gates open at 11.30pm, the first race will start around 12.30pm and there is a free sausage sizzle for the first 125 at the track. A courtesy bus will be running throughout the day.
