Organiser, Maureen Ledingham, expected around 14 tables on the night, but due to other events being held in the region, only seven were filled.
“Fairview on Trawalla was on and the Moree races were also on so we did well to fill seven tables. It was still alright though, we had almost 14 tables at the last event and raised $800 so everyone was very generous,” she said.
A team travelled from around Newcastle all the way to Garah to support the event.
“They are friends with the publican here and they travel to Garah to see them sometimes and when they heard about the fundraiser and the cause, they decided to make a special trip for the weekend,” Ms Ledingham said.
She said the quizmaster, Peter Van Driest, made sure every brain was tested on the night.
“The questions were definitely the most challenging we’ve ever had but everyone still enjoyed the challenge and the overall winners were the Jolly Jumbucks from Mungindi,” Ms Ledingham said.
Ashley’s Christine Knight took home the first and third prize of the raffle being the seven-piece outdoor setting and the two bottles of wine, and Garah’s Greg Harrison won the second prize esky.
“The chocolate wheel was well received; we made about $200 just off the tickets. We had a meat pack and fruit and veggie vouchers on offer and they caught everyone’s interest,” she said.
Ms Ledingham said the $700 would be transferred to the Garah Community Fundraiser’s bank account until a local resident was in need.
“We have one gentleman away at the moment getting cancer treatment but other than that no one here is in need of help for medical expenses which is great. Our funds will stay in the bank until we have someone come to us in need and then we will work out how much we can afford to give to help them out with travel, accommodation, medical and other costs,” she said.
