Moree Plains Shire Council projects officer, Esther Chapman, said Moree was, so far, the most supported round of auditions both with entrants and audience members.
“We had 19 auditions all up on the day. There were six juniors, two junior groups, three senior groups and eight senior individuals. I think the judges found this round particularly hard to judge,” she said.
And with only one more round of auditions, being in Narrabri at the weekend, finalists have started preparing for their shot on the Moree grand final stage.
“We have a very strong and talented group of finalists this year and at the grand final we will have eight judges in total. One special guest from each town (Goondiwindi, Inverell, Moree and Narrabri) including the three original judges and of course our celebrity guest judge Tim Omaji or Timomatic,” she said.
The locals who will progress to the grand final from the Moree audition are:
• Junior category: Chelsea Bourke, Piper Phillis, Ashlee Moore and Kaylib Taunton.
• Junior group: Chelsea Bourke and Camilla O’Neill, and Claudia Hiscox and Alliyah Davison.
• Senior category: Teagan Hodges, Gabby Clift and Clare Muggleton.
• Senior group: Gabby, Jake and Clare and ‘The In-Laws’.
“Each finalist will have until the grand final (on April 18) to prepare and perfect a different song to their audition.
“At the end of each round of auditions the judges gave feedback for the finalists to work on before the grand final. Then, on the night they will perform for all the judges. From there a winner and runner-up will be announced for each category and each finalist also has a chance to win an Australian Academy of Country Music single scholarship awarded by the judges,” Mrs Chapman said.
Anyone in the region looking to enter the competition will have their last chance at the Narrabri bowling club on Sunday at 2pm.
On the night of the grand final Tim Omaji will perform for the crowd.
“We will be doing all the ticket sales online this year so those who wish to attend need to get in quickly,” Mrs Chapman said.
