The Moree team consists of Dad Errol and his children Michael and Tarni.
The Carters are busy with last-minute checks to their bombs this week before they head to the Collarenebri Mud Trials on Sunday.
The action will get underway about 9am with three classes of bombs to race on the day.
Errol said there were about 30 entries in the standard class and about 15 in the modifieds.
A relatively new section is for buggies, which has attracted about 10 nominations.
“The buggies only started a couple of years ago and numbers are building,” Carter said.
So too is the popularity of the sport.
“About the last four to five years the interest has really come along,” Carter said.
“Places like Boomi – which hosts the Australian championships – gets up to 60 to 65 cars across the three classes.”
Collarenebri hosts the NSW championships and Sarina the QLD championships.
Mungindi has a run in June and this year Walgett is coming on board to host a competition in July.
Pallamallawa’s meet in August wraps up the season. Here points teams have accumulated from all the rounds will see the Bomb of the Year named.
Pally also has a special award for the ladies.
“We have about four or five females who race now and we are encouraging more,” Carter said.
He said it was a family sport.
“The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree,” he laughed.
“My kids have grown up around it.”
Carter started the sport after a motorbike accident at 16. He spent his time recovering building a mud bomb.
“My family was always into speedway and my dad ran the Moree mud trials but never drove.”
Even if it doesn’t mean racing, the events are always a good day out for the family with about 500 spectators expected at Colly this weekend.
There will be a canteen available and camping the night before.
“Me and a mate started a dance-off a couple of years ago as a bit of entertainment the night before so we invite everyone to come out. It’s just a bit of fun,” he said.
“It will be a good weekend for everyone.”
Carter added anyone who was interested in the sport was encouraged to make enquiries.
“Whether it is at the trials or outside the trials… don’t be backwards in approaching us,” he said.
“We are always happy to help.”
