A Barwon Local Area Command (LAC) spokesperson said random alcohol and drug testing of drivers was one of the strategies available to the Barwon LAC in order to combat the fatalities and serious injuries on local roads.
“Whilst random breath testing for alcohol is a regular sight in the local area, police also have the power to submit drivers to sobriety tests and take them to the hospital for analysis to check for the presence of drugs,” the spokesperson said.
Barwon LAC are assisted by the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command during statewide operations such as Operation Drink Drive and Operation Safe Arrival.
“These operations can consist of random drug and alcohol testing. Barwon LAC utilises additional specialist units when available to enhance local operations,” they said.
