Mr Park balances his life between the western suburbs of Sydney and South Africa.
During the visit, Mr Park spoke of his unusual love of Africa and why he writes his books there.
He said his newest and 11th book, The Hunter, was inspired by African places such as Zimbabwe which reminded him of Australian country towns like Moree.
“In 1995 we went to Africa for a holiday… My wife and I were pretty quiet travellers; we’d been to Europe. You know how there is always a planner and a non-planner? Well I was the non-planner so I wasn’t really fussed about going to Africa and that was what made it so special,” he said.
Mr Park said Africa was “so off his radar” in fact, that whilst waiting for their plane he asked his wife where they were going.
“We got to the airport terminal in Africa and picked up our hired-out Corolla and drove out on this magnificent freeway which lead us to Kruger National Park. We saw elephants, rhinos and lions and it felt like I’d stepped out of Sydney and into a David Attenborough doco,” he said.
After a few failed attempts to fulfil his life dream, to write a book, Mr Park finally found his inspirational place - Africa.
“We found ourselves saying we’ll have to do this again when we come back, even though the trip was meant to be our last overseas trip… and we’ve travelled to South Africa every year since, except one,” he said.
Mr Park kept his fans on edge, laughing and entertained during the talk, and signed a few copies of his latest novel.
Mr Park’s books, including The Hunter, are available to loan at the community library.
