Eighteen-year-old Heidi Morris flew to the largest cattle station in Queensland - and third largest in Australia - on Sunday and started her first day as a station-hand on Monday.

Miss Morris said she had always wanted to spend time jillarooing and when the opportunity presented itself through friends of the family, she was keen to go.

“I’ll be mustering cattle up to 1000km away, doing general things around the station to keep it going, breaking in some of the horses and heaps more,” she said.

With a capacity to carry 30,000 head of cattle, Miss Morris will be sure to keep busy during the two-month period.

“I am really looking forward to spending time in the open spaces and learning so much about how a cattle station runs,” she said.

She hoped to attend rodeos, campdrafts and the popular, annual event - the Birdsville Races.

“I will miss family and friends but it’s just such a great opportunity and the company who owns Davenport Downs Station, Paraway Pastoral, has stations all around Australia,” Miss Morris said.

Davenport Downs Station is on channel country and are known for their 1.5 million hectare bullock fattening operation.

“I would recommend applying for the experience alone,” Miss Morris said. “If anyone is looking to do something like this in their gap year, then it is the perfect opportunity and they’ve got cattle stations as close as Barraba.”
