Recipients included 14-year-old Alexandra Rush of Gravesend, Justin Rohde from Pallamallawa and Moree’s Ben Schubert, along with 15-year-old Curtis Hayne and 13-year-old Jazmine Carroll.
Ella Bella Memorial Scholarships Pty Ltd director, Michelle Morgan, said they were a not-for-profit organisation that helped with schooling costs of rural youth, primarily of students in grades seven to 10.
The students apply for scholarships based on their chosen career path, and include the region and school to undertake their studies.
Students are eligible for $1000 of funding which is given to them in instalments following the successful completion of assessments.
While completing the scholarships, students receive progress reports and a full tax rebate.
Ms Morgan said a partnership with local businesses helped show what careers were available, but it was up to the student as to how far they wished to pursue it.
“We offer extension studies and/or vocational training in the field of interest,” she said.
“The kids have a pretty good idea of what they want to do, but everything is tailored to their needs.
“It depends on the student, but there can be work placement or additional training in the holidays.”
Alexandra aspires to be a vet, Justin is interested in agronomy and agricultural flying, while Jazmine formulates ideas for food development and marketing.
Ben will complement his athletics success with math and science studies while Curtis is a published ecologist whose ornithology research is assisting local farmers and park rangers in their dispute with coal seam gas miners.
Justin said the scholarships provided a great opportunity.
“The scholarships help give us a career direction and it’s great for us rural kids,” he said.
Alexandra spoke on behalf of all the recipients when she said it would be a wonderful experience.
“It’s a great initiative which helps rural kids find direction in their chosen field and have further success. It’s a great opportunity for us to continue to strive for success,” she said.
The scholarships are a joint partnership involving the Lions Club and Ella Bella.
Lions Club president Damien Crump thanked representative John Atkins for introducing the program to the club.
“Thanks to John for his commitment and encouragement in driving this year’s first program,” he said.
