Emergency services were called to 1.5km north of Boggabilla shortly before 3am Saturday after a truck driver found man's body on the highway.
Paramedics were called to check the truck driver, who was shock. He has been taken to Moree District Hospital where he’s undergone mandatory blood and urine tests conducted.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
Emergency services, the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) and members of the local council remain on site.
2.30pm: There are no longer any diversions.
Southbound light vehicles are being diverted at Goondawindi to travel via Boomi, Garah and Moree to then rejoin the Newell Highway.
Northbound light vehicles are being diverted at Moree to travel via Garah, Boomi and Goondawindi to rejoin the Newell Highway.
This diversion adds about 55km to the journey.
Heavy vehicles are being diverted locally around the accident site via Lowes Road and Bruxner Road to then rejoin the Newell Highway
There is no forecast as to when the Newell Highway will reopen.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution in the area and allow additional travel time.
