Region on flood watch

The SES says the Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding along all rivers and creeks within a nominated valley and is not a Flood Warning.

A strong high lies over the southern Tasman Sea while a trough extends from northern Queensland through western New South Wales.

The SES says the weather system is expected to bring heavy rain over parts of Macintyre and Gwydir River valleys during Thursday afternoon and Friday Morning.

The central Gwydir and Upper Macintyre valleys have had rainfall over the past few days. Farmers and other landholders should keep a watch on their streams and be prepared to move pumps, equipment and livestock to higher ground.

Flash flooding may occur in creeks and at low level crossings. People living in or near those streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.

At this stage there is a 75% chance of flooding as well as local flash flooding along the following river valleys from Thursday afternoon onwards:

*Central Gwydir River to Moree - minor to moderate flooding

* Upper Macintyre River to Ashford - minor to moderate flooding

People should avoid walking or driving through flood water as this is the main cause of death during floods.
