The Armidale School’s captain of boats Ben Mulligan (from Moree) will be competing in his second Head of the River, having crewed with the TAS first four last year.
“We’re still a bit nervous as always, but more confident than last year because it’s not new to all of us,” he said.
Mulligan said participation in an inter-schools regatta last month in Sydney was great preparation for the big event.
“It was a great opportunity to get a feel for the course and the likely competition, three weeks out from Head of the River,” said Mulligan, who is also the TAS senior prefect.
Samuel Jackson-Bolton from Lightning Ridge, who coxed the TAS First IV last year, has this year taken to the oars and will row in the thirds.
New to the sport are the three coxswains, all from Year 8. Amongst them is 14-year-old Jack Berry from Rowena.
“It’s been a great experience learning more things and developing a tight bond with a few of the seniors, being their cox,” he said.
“There’s been a bit to learn with all the calls and the rest, but once you get the hang of it, it comes fairly naturally and hopefully we will do well.”
