The EMA decision, announced on Thursday, paves the way for the first vaccine to be approved in the European Union for children under the age of 12.
The European Commission still has to give its official approval to the move but that is considered a formality.
In Europe, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has so far only been approved for people aged 12 and older.
But in Israel and the United States, children as young as five can be vaccinated with it.
The responsible experts spent about two months reviewing data on the risks and efficacy of the vaccine in five to 11-year-olds before issuing their final assessment.
