Wednesday's cases pushed the seven-day rolling average daily case count to 97, the highest of the pandemic.

The outbreak remains centred on Auckland, which saw 68 new cases, but ongoing cases have prompted an extension of a lockdown in the Waikato, south of Auckland, until Monday.

The six cases found in Hamilton are typical of the trickle of cases in the region.

Auckland is likely to remain in lockdown for about another month, with the government requiring an uptick in vaccination rates to 90 per cent before a shift to a vaccine certificate regime.

Health workers administered 42,136 vaccine does on Tuesday, including 10,872 first doses.

As of Wednesday, 84 per cent of the eligible population are partially vaccinated, and 70 per cent are double-dosed.
