While many teenagers have spent large chunks of lockdown screenbound, regional Victorian sisters Daisy and Tilly Johnson whiled away the hours creating their own sustainable skincare range, One Summer.

The 14-piece range was created during 2020's extended lockdown and includes cleansers, serums, clay masks, moisturisers and a toner. Australian botanicals such as aloe vera, kakadu plum, cedarwood and ylang ylang are key ingredients and there are no added parabens.

Exemplifying their generation's ethos, products are cruelty free and come in sustainably savvy packaging - the cartridge refill system allows customers to return a product's cartridge insert once empty, which the brand then cleans, refills and reuses.

"The beauty industry is responsible for so much plastic waste and it was really important to us that One Summer didn't add to that," says Daisy.

Developed with help from their dad Stu, who's worked in the beauty industry for more than 25 years, the family each played a role in the brand's evolution: Daisy looks after product development, Tilly is the wordsmith behind the brand's personality and tone, while 18-year-old brother Barnaby takes care of the supply chain and logistics.

"The success of One Summer belongs to the kids," says Stu. "I was just there to hold their hand and guide along the way. They have had the final say at each and every point and it's been great to watch them bring their passion for skincare and sustainability to life, all while juggling school."

One dollar of revenue received for each product goes towards youth mental health charity Reach Out. "The social enterprise piece was important to us and it's reflected in the brand's name," says Tilly. "'One' speaks to one dollar donated, while 'summer' speaks to our passion for the ocean and the environment. We're proud to be able to support both."
