With the year set to be an exciting adventure for all schools, sports and activities, everyone knows how quickly that went downhill.
However, the members of the Moree Physical Culture Club persevered through the challenges thrown their way to lead a successful and fun filled year just as they normally would.
After only a month of normal lessons in the hall, March saw us convert our lounge rooms, spare rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, garages and even backyards into makeshift physie areas for Zoom classes.
Anywhere the girls could find that gave them even close to enough space, was now for learning the rest of the routines and practising twice a week.
Two months of Zoom classes came close to breaking all members, especially seeing our friends around the country being able to start outdoor classes before we were.
But May finally came around and we progressed to outdoor classes.
Now it might not seem that bad, but dancing in sneakers when you normally dance bare foot and uneven grass compared to floor boards is not the easiest task.
But we finally made it back into our hall in June!
Everything was looking up from there and we were on track for competitions in October.
Unfortunately, our regular competitions in August were cancelled early on and as things kept changing around the country, zone competitions and nationals were looking unlikely the more time went on.
Teachers reminded parents and students to keep persevering, keep learning and to keep coming because even if all competitions were cancelled, physie was still your two-day-a-week regular sport and you were still learning, expressing and improving even if it was for next year.
October rolled around and our major zone competitions were able to go ahead with no audience.
It was disappointing for the parents to not be able to watch their daughters' hard work, but exceptionally rewarding for the members to be able to showcase their determination to survive with physie through COVID.
Moree did remarkably well at the Junior Zone Competition held in Tamworth over the weekend of October 17 and 18.
All 20 of the Moree competitors qualified for the semi-finals, with 14 of these girls further qualifying for the finals.
Nine girls received a top five placing:
- Six years - Eva came first, Sophia placed second, Aydalin placed fourth and Matilda placed fifth
- Eight years - Pippa placed fifth
- Nine years - Shae placed fourth
- 12 years - Talitha placed third
- 15 and first year seniors - Courtney placed third and Millie placed fourth
The two 13 and 14 years and 15 and first year seniors teams did a remarkable job competing with only a handful of practises all together.
The ladies and seniors then headed to Coffs Harbour for their zone competition the following weekend on October 24 and 25.
Twelve ladies qualified for the semi-finals.
Three then furthered qualified for the finals with Sam taking home a fourth place.
Due to border closures and the constant unknown that surrounded COVID, nationals was instead broken into state competitions.
Eva, Sophia, Aydalin, Matilda and Pippa all competed at their first competition of this calibre at the Quaycentre in Olympic Park, Sydney.
The girls performed beautifully in a stadium ten-fold to what they are use to being in.
Talitha also attended and performed a personal best.
Sam then headed to ladies states at the same venue and said her performance was "better than Coffs, better than last year".
There is not much to add when you know you have improved from previous competitions.
The girls were able to finish off the physie year with a little bit of normality in the form of the annual Club Competition.
Although the day was split into two sessions, the girls were able to have their parents watch them in their first proper competition of the year and did not fail to stun them with their dedication to finish off the year with consistency and to the calibre of years before.

Physie was the one constant thing through a year of unknowns.
