Police said shots were fired at five homes in the early hours of Monday morning in Boggabilla, north of Moree, near the Queensland border.
No one was injured in the shootings which unfolded about 3.30am.
New England police suspect the shootings were a "targeted attack" and several police remained at the scene yesterday, scouring the homes and roads for clues.
Homes were hit in Merriwa Street, Yeoman Street and Racecourse Road and were under police guard on Monday as forensic investigations continued.
A NSW Police Force Spokesperson said investigations were ongoing and urged any witnesses to contact New England police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
