He first joined the club in October 1970 after a couple of mates invited him along to a meeting one day.

"And that was it," he said.

Half a century later, and multiple terms as president, Mr Brooks is still a Lion and happy to continue volunteering his time to help better the community.

"I have enjoyed it," he said.

"It's been great. I've got a lot of satisfaction doing different things and giving something back to the community."

Over the years Mr Brooks has been president of Moree Lions Club on four separate occasions, served seven years as secretary, was on the District cabinet for a number of years and served as zone chairman. He was also convention chairman in 2005 and 2015 when Moree hosted the zone convention.

"I had a lot of good help - a lot of people have helped me along the way," he said.

Mr Brooks said like most volunteer organisations, the biggest change he's seen over the years is the reduction in volunteer numbers.

"Back when I first joined we had 40 plus members in our club," he said.

"Now we're down to 19.

"Back in those days, ladies weren't involved in the club either. We had Lions Ladies for the women, but now ladies are Lions in their own right, which has been a good thing for our organisation."

One of his highlights as a Lion was organising the two conventions in Moree, but generally Mr Brooks said he just enjoys giving back to the community.

"You get a lot of satisfaction when you're doing things for other people," he said.

"I've met some lifelong friends over the years too, and people from different towns.

"I've enjoyed the friendships I've made throughout the 50 years, not only with members of the club but the community as well.

"I'm very proud of the fact that I've been there for that long. To be in a service club, it's a great thing to do."

In recognition of Mr Brooks' 50 years of service, Moree Lions Club president Jock King presented him with a medallion during the club's monthly dinner meeting on Thursday night.
