King was elected to the post at Sunday's zone AGM after Byrnes opted to not stand again after six years in the position.
The Moree president since 2015, stepping up to the Central North top job was something of a natural progression for King having also served as the zone vice-president for the last two years.

"It has always been part of the plan over the last two years," he said.
He will lead a new-look executive with Narrabri's Daniel Kahl stepping up as senior vice-president, and Inverell's Louise Wilson coming on board as junior vice-president. The zone's first-ever female club president, Wilson replaces Jenny Middlemiss after she decided to stand down following many years of service in different roles.
Wayne McMahon will continue as the competition manager and David Rodgers the secretary/treasurer.
Byrnes said he felt it "was time" and spoke of the presidency as a "tremendous honour".
"It's a great privilege to be able to get into that position," he said, adding that his interest in community rugby will continue.
While it wasn't always smooth sailing and there were some "interesting times", he said the last six years had been enjoyable.
