This includes the cancellation of Friday night's cocktail opening of the Archibald Prize exhibition.
Interim director Kate Tuart said it is with a "heavy heart" that these decisions have been made.
"Like many of our industry colleagues and local organisations, our team is monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely and following current recommendations made by state and federal governments," she said in a statement.
"To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, and to support Australia's mission to #flattenthecurve, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all upcoming March and April events and public programs."

At this stage, the doors to BAMM will remain open to the public during the gallery's usual opening hours, so people will still be able to view the Archibald Prize touring exhibition from Saturday, March 21 until May 2.
"If you are feeling well and looking to experience art, we are here and we are open," Ms Tuart said.
"Staff will be on site and we are exploring exciting ways to connect with you using social media.
"For those who do attend BAMM, we ask that you follow relevant precautionary measures and instructions from BAMM staff to prioritise the health and well-being of our community and other visitors.
"We would like to keep BAMM open to the public and can only do this through the mature and considerate actions of our visitors.
"If you are feeling unwell or concerned for your health, please keep your distance for the time being."
This will be the last week of children's art classes and the Art Therapy adult group for the time being.
Participants are asked to stay up-to-date with future changes via BAMM's website, Instagram and Facebook.
Ms Tuart said the BAMM team will continue to monitor the evolving situation and adapt their response as required.
"It is our hope that our usual programs will re-commence soon and events can be rescheduled once the situation has positively changed," she said.
Refunds will be given to those who have purchased tickets to the Archibald Prize opening night. People who purchased tickets with cash are encouraged to contact BAMM next week.
"It is with a heavy heart that we have made these decisions and I thank you in advance for your understanding," Ms Tuart said.
"We are all being called upon to be responsible and caring members of our community.
"We ask you to take care of yourselves and each other, and hope to see you again soon at BAMM."
