January 26 marks the 182nd anniversary of the Waterloo Creek massacre, which saw up to 500 Gamilaraay people killed by police near Moree.
To commemorate the anniversary, all members of the Moree community are invited to meet at 11.30am this Sunday, January 26 in front of Moree Court House, from where they will take part in a peaceful march to Jellicoe Park.
At Jellicoe Park there will be traditional dancing, yarning circles and guest speakers. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided.
This will be the fifth year the Moree Gamilaraay Invasion Day committee has organised a march and gathering to remember their ancestors killed on that fateful day 182 years ago.
Co-organiser Paul Spearim Jnr said the day is a chance for people to come together to share stories and honour their people.
"It's all about remembering the way of our people, who we are the descendants of," he said.
"It's important to pay our respects to our people who were massacred on the 26th of January, 1838."
