Children from Goodstart Moree and K/1 from Moree Christian School took part in this year's National Simultaneous Storytime event at Moree Community Library, where they read this year's chosen book Alpacas with Maracas.
Moree Community Library's outreach services officer Kristy Baker read the book, written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove, with help from minion Emmalyn Willis.
Following the reading, the children enjoyed designing their own scratch-art maracas which they then had the opportunity to pin on hand-crafted posters of the characters from the story, Macca and Al.
The children also got to feel the fleece of an alpaca from Yass named Ferdinand, who sent them a letter, along with a bunch of his fleece and photos of the process of carding it into yarn.
Held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), National Simultaneous Storytime aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for foundation to year 6. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
The simultaneous storytime event is held as part of Library and Information Week, which runs from May 20 to 24.
On Friday, author Kim Hodges will speak at Moree Community Library about her second memoir, Girl Over the Edge, which details her long journey with depression.
