The cluster takes in the entire New England North West and stretches from Willow Tree in the south to Moree in the west, north to the border and east past Walcha.

"This allows us to be out of the road more, doing more speeding enforcement, more breath tests and stopping more cars," Sergeant Michael Buko said.

The boost in numbers comes in the midst of Global Road Safety Week and new research from the NRMA that shows drivers are more likely to lose their lives on country roads than in the city.

Since the start of the year, 90 people have died on country roads - almost two-thirds of the state's road toll of 136.

Two-thirds of all fatalities occurred on country roads, yet the bush only makes up one-third of the NSW overall population.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that 89 people had been detected drink-driving across the New England North West since January 1.

Thirteen of those were charged locally with high-range, or being more than three times the legal limit.

Thirty-four people had been charged with mid-range drink-driving, and 36 for low-range.

Five have been charged with special-range and one novice, after 79,496 random breath tests across the Oxley and New England Police Districts.
