Moree Plains Shire Council (MPSC) passed a motion to establish a working group to come up with a Masterplan regarding the future of the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre (MAAC).
The working group will consist of Cr Mike Montgomery and Cr Stephen Ritchie, who were elected as MPSC's representatives, one representative of the MAAC Limited Board, a Tourism Moree representative, the General Manager and his nominees.
The group will discuss the future of the centre and ways it can be improved, including the potential construction of a new heated 25 metre pool that would allow swimming lessons and aqua classes to run all year round.
"We can bring a draft back to council so we can have a look at what options there are," Cr Montgomery said.
"There needs to be a change in the way the MAAC operates. It's unsustainable to spend the money we are there without having a plan going forward."
Cr Montgomery added the Moree community is in a fantastic position in regards to water and its accessibility, but stressed the need for proper plans going forward.
"We maybe need to plan for a new clientele without abandoning those who currently use it," he said.
"It's a big step forward in the longevity of our water," Cr Humphries added.
"We have this magnificent artesian water and we need to use it and keep it going for future generations."
The working group will try to meet at least twice a month, with the Masterplan to be submitted to council by June 30.
