Human bones were found along the bank of the Mehi River in Moree by locals celebrating the New Year on Tuesday, January 1.
A crime scene was established and an extensive search of the area began on Wednesday, January 2.
The land search effort, which involved the use of a cadavar dog from Sydney, New England Police District resources and police rescue personnel, as well as SES and RFS volunteers, concluded on Friday afternoon.
After three days of scouring the area, on both sides of the river between Anne and Edward streets, police found what they believe to be a number of bone fragments.
Those items have been sent to forensics in Newcastle to be tested, along with the skeletal remains which were found on New Year’s Day.
“The exhibits we seized from the search will be tested by forensics,” New England Police District Inspector Cheryl Day said.
Inspector Day said it’s now a waiting game for the results to return before police decide on their next move.
“There are intentions for a water search to be conducted at some point,” she said.
Meanwhile, anyone with any information on the remains is urged to contact Moree police on 6757 0799 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
