Executive projects officer, John Carleton, said the Boggabilla Sport and Community Facilities Project would see the construction of change rooms and amenities to enhance ommunity wellbeing, cohesion and resilience through use of the oval.
“The project will provide an opportunity for the MacIntyre Warriors to collaborate with the local community, focusing sport and recreational efforts around the oval and community facilities more broadly to build more sustainable partnerships with the community, and in addition, provide a secure, functional and robust sport and community facilities change room for the Boggabilla community,” Mr Carleton said.
“The project will support community efforts already underway to bring facilities at the Boggabilla oval to a standard that will enable the grounds to be used for community and regional sporting activities, such as rugby league, school sports carnivals and other community activities.”
The project will benefit residents, community and social organisations within Boggabilla and the region to include the Boggabilla Central School, DRUG ARM Australasia, Toomelah Local Aboriginal Land Council, and Care Goondiwindi.
“This initiative supports the Boggabilla community in their aim to build capacity of disadvantaged communities to drive a process of positive change,” Mr Carleton said.
“Location of the project has been identified as a site for disadvantage due to the size of the precinct, the amount of concentrated public housing, and its social issues,” he said.
“This project is a component of a strategic drive to improve the lifestyle of community members, particularly indigenous youth, in the Boggabilla precinct.
“The MacIntyre Warriors Rugby League Football Club has very capable players with a range of technical skills, which will be available to assist in construction of this project.
“Following collaboration with the community and MacIntyre Warriors, detail designs were prepared and now the project is in the construction phase with two approaches to the market made for:
- Civil works and construction of a concrete foundation
- Construction of the building walls, roof and fit out of change rooms including the referees’ room with water and electricity
These works are scheduled for completion of the facility in March 2019.
In addition to the above improvements the following activities are also currently underway:
- Top dressing of the Boggabilla oval is being carried out in preparation for the Group 19 Senior Rugby League competition in 2019
- Funding has been received from the NSW Government for installation of one set of LED field lights
“The MacIntyre Warriors have been a major boost to the community in bringing the Boggabilla and Toomelah communities together to support this very dedicated team,” Mr Carleton said.
“Credit must go to the hard-working committee, players and supporters for increasing community wellbeing, cohesion and resilience,” he added.
