Two Moree people were named finalists at the 2018 NSW/ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards Presentation Gala held at Orange Ex-Services’ Club on Friday, November 16.

The awards, hosted by PRIME7 News’ Floyd Cush (who originally hails from Moree), saw more than 250 guests gathered from across the state, including official guest The Hon. Paul Toole MP, Minister for Lands and Forestry, to celebrate regional New South Wales and the ACT’s high achievers.
Moree’s Matthew Priestly and Linda Maidens might not have come away with the major gong in their respective categories, but were presented as finalists on the evening.
Mr Priestley was presented as a finalist in the prestigious icare Connecting Communities Award by Ashley Aulburn, Project Manager – Health and Community Engagement, icare.
A proud Mehi Murri man, Mr Priestly is a senior leader at Moree East Public School, where he creates and conducts indigenous language and culture classes. Mr Priestly is on several Aboriginal education committees and groups and is chair of the Language and Culture Nest.

He works with elders, young people, community leaders and local service providers to ensure programs are relevant, engaging and appropriate to the needs of the community and local people.
Meanwhile, Ms Maidens was presented as a semi finalist in the prestigious Ricoh Australia Customer Service Award, by The Hon. Paul Toole MP, Minister for Lands and Forestry.
Ms Maidens works for Newell Advocacy as manager and is an advocate for people with a disability. She is compassionate about promoting the protection of people with a disability and to ensure that their rights are upheld.
The nine category winners are:
- Orange Waratah Sports Club – NSW Department of Industry – Lands & Water Crown Reserve Corporate Manager Award
- Norah Head Lighthouse Land Manager – NSW Department of Industry – Lands & Water Crown Reserve Community Manager Award
- Len Waters Culture Tours of Daruka – Ricoh Australia Customer Service Award
- Anika Molesworth of Broken Hill – Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award
- Dr Daisy William of Armidale – TransGrid Leadership Award
- Mackellar Care Services of Gunnedah – Prime Super Employer Excellence in Aged Care Award
- The Big Green Cup Café of Bungendore – G.J. Gardner Homes Women Creating Change Award
- Southern Cotton of Whitton – Awards Australia Business Achievement Award
- Orange Sky Laundry Newcastle – icare Connecting Communities Award
Eight winners each received $2,000 courtesy of Awards Australia and a trophy, and the other winner received an air time package on PRIME7 and trophy.
Sandra Holden was announced as the Repco Authorised Service People’s Choice Award winner and received a $500 car service voucher. One lucky voter has also received a $250 voucher.
The awards night culminated a tremendously successful year with hundreds of nominations received from across regional NSW and the ACT.
