A number of nationally-recognised speakers will be encouraging the Moree community to stand up and speak out against domestic violence during next week’s White Ribbon Day 2018 forum.

This year, Moree’s No Violence Alliance (NoVA) committee will be hosting a full-day forum for White Ribbon Day, featuring five well-known guest speakers.
“Each year we try to do something different; we’ve done a ball, marches and this year we decided to go with the forum idea,” NoVA publicity officer Glen Crump said.
Among this year’s guest speakers is Ed Mosby, a Torres Strait Islander psychologist who has spent the past seven years supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, families and individuals with their experiences and understandings of family and domestic violence and related issues.
“We came across Ed at a Stop Domestic Violence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander conference in Sydney,” NoVA vice chair Carol French said.
“Some of the things he spoke about is amazing. Hopefully we can adopt some of that in Moree.”

The other guest speakers include:
- Jennah Dungay – Education Centre Against Violence (EVAC) Aboriginal senior statewide educator with six years’ experience in working with Aboriginal men, women, children and families.
- Jay Little – Former NRL player and Let’s Tackle Domestic Violence advocate
- Aunty Pam Greer – Activist, educational consultant and advisor on Aboriginal issues and brokerage for communities with more than 30 years’ experience delivering services and training to Aboriginal workers and community members with a particular focus on domestic and family violence and the abuse of older people.
- Adam Marshall – Member for Northern Tablelands and White Ribbon ambassador
There will also be a presentation from the Moree Father’s Group who will speak about what they’re doing in town.
The event will provide an opportunity to talk to the guest speakers, while information tables will be set up for people to find out how to get help.
The event is centred around the theme STOP – See, Talk, Offer support, Prevent.
All are welcome to attend the event, however the NoVA committee would particularly love to see a large contingent of men attend, in keeping with the White Ribbon movement of men and boys working to end men’s violence against women.
“It’s open to the entire community but we’d like to encourage a lot of men to turn out with Moree being number three with domestic violence statistics,” Mr Crump said.
“We’d particularly love to see sporting clubs, especially the Moree Boomerangs, Moree Boars, Macintyre Warriors and Mungindi Grasshoppers who are all Let’s Tackle Domestic Violence ambassadors, but also the union, soccer and AFL clubs come along. Hopefully all of them will come and have a listen.
“It’s important we get the message out to the entire community.”
The White Ribbon Day forum will be held at Moree Town Hall on Friday, November 23 from 9.30am to 4pm. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.
