Moree Boomerangs win three of four games in Group 19 women's rugby league nines tournament

Moree Boomerangs are well on their way to defending their Group 19 women’s nines title following a successful two rounds of this year’s competition.

The Moree women have won three of their four games so far and have just one game left before the finals this weekend.

In week one of the three-round tackle tournament, the Rangs defeated Uralla 18-6 and Warialda 12-8.

They then backed up with a 16-4 win against Guyra in round two on Saturday, October 27, however went down 6-10 to Glen Innes.

“We only had half a team on Saturday, as some members of our team went away for an indigenous netball carnival,” Moree captain/coach Lorilie Haines said.

“But some of our 17s got the opportunity to step up and have a run which was good.”

This year the Rangs have two teams in the rugby league competition – the women’s side and an under 17s team, which has won against Ashford but lost to Narwan.

This is the third year Group 19 has held a women’s nines tackle tournament, and with more teams joining in this year, Haines said the competition is better.

“Also with the under 17s playing, it gives them the opportunity to develop a bit more too; it’s a good pathway into the opens,” she said.

Last year Moree finished the three-round competition undefeated to claim the 2017 shield.

Although they won’t finish undefeated this year, Haines said the girls have played well.

“I can’t fault them,” she said.

“They’re stepping up all the time and give 100 per cent.”

Deborah McGrady has been a stand-out in the backs, while Carly Walton is showing great talent in the forwards.

Haines said the Moree girls would prefer to play league over league tag and hopes Group 19 will transition to women’s league “sooner rather than later”.

“I believe it’s what we’re made to do,” she said.

Group 19 will select a representative side from the nines tournament, and Haines hopes some of the Moree girls will make it.

The Rangs will face Narwan this Saturday, November 3 before the finals that afternoon.
