While we don’t quite breed our own cricket teams these days, like the Murphy family pictured, the sport remains as vibrant within the community as it did when this photo was taken back in 1929.
Taken at Boomi, the Murphy Cricket team consisted of fathers, brothers, and cousins, from right to left:
- Frank Murphy “Thorndale” and Edward Murphy “Athlone” Boomi with sons George Murphy “Thorndale” Boomi, Andy Murphy “Thorndale” Boomi, Frank Murphy “Thorndale” Aubrey Murphy “Athlone” Jack Murphy “Thorndale” Norman Murphy “Athlone”, Watkin Murphy “Athlone”, Tommy Murphy “Athlone”, Francis Murphy “Athlone”, Jim Murphy “Thorndale”, Colin Murphy “Athlone”.
The Murphy Cricket team played throughout the district, and were regarded as quite the formidable force.
Today, a number of their descendents continue to play cricket in the region, and the Boomi Cricket Competition is as healthy as ever.
