Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall visited Moree on Friday to congratulate its members on securing roughly $163,000.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
“It’s a very exciting announcement. I know you guys [Men’s Shed members] have been working very hard to access funding for a purpose-built and much larger Men’s Shed for a long time.”
“I can see the marks on the wall from the last flood,” Mr Marshall said as he inspected the property.
“I know you will be looking to build a new premises that’s not going to have a meter of floodwater running through it.”
The new facility will include a toilet, kitchen and works space for the men. It will be a big change from the original premises, which used to be an old chicken pavilion.
“Men’s Sheds are so important, not just for the services they provide to the community. They encourage people to go out of their house for a social interaction. The worst thing we can do is discard older people and make them sit at home where they are isolated. They need to get out and be active.”
Mayor Katrina Humphries also took to the floor to praise the Men’s Shed, and say the new premises would be an improvement on their “humble abode”.
“We all love our Men’s Shed. Every boy should have a shed. The talent and quality of workmanship that senior builders have is incredible. We must foster and encourage the senior generation to bring in the next generation of handymen, otherwise we will have none.
“I know that if my son had a chisel in his hand, he wouldn’t know which end to use.”
Moree Men’s Shed president Peter Sampson said he couldn’t thank Mr Marshall and Moree Plains Shire enough for the grant.
“Without Adam and the Shire, we would still be waiting for the next flood to come through. We appreciate everything that has been done.”
