Moree Amateur Swimming Club’s 2018/19 season will kick off with their first club night on Thursday, October 18 (the first Thursday of term four).
Registrations open on Thursday, September 20 and the club would love to see plenty of new faces and old ones join them this season, which runs throughout term four of 2018 and term one of the 2019 school year.
Children aged seven years and under will once again be offered free Junior Dolphin membership for 2018/19 season, while cost for children aged eight to 18 is $110.
The club will this year be taking Active Kids vouchers, so for those wishing to use their $100 voucher on swimming club will only need to make up the difference of $10.
This year the club is initiating a leadership and mentor program for secondary student members as a way to boost membership among teenagers aged 14 to 18.

The program aims to get teenagers involved with the running and direction of the club, giving them an opportunity to stay involved in a sport they love, even if they no longer want to be competitive.
To participate in the program, teenagers must regularly attend club nights; engage with the young swimmers and assist the tadpoles in the water during their events; lead fun and games between races; be a role model; help set-up/pack-up and learn what’s involved in being a marshall, check marshall, time keeper, starter, recorder, and stroke referee; help organise and run activities for the Christmas party/fun night and help out during carnivals.
At the end of the season, teenagers will receive a certificate for their resume, access to online and practical training, the opportunity to show leadership within the community and the option to race each week, just leading up to school carnivals, or not at all.
“If they come to enough club nights, we’ll also give them vouchers to local businesses as an incentive to get them to participate and help out with the club and the littlies,” club president Cassie Coleman said.
“We’ve got a lot of under sevens, so it’d be great if older mentors could help out with them.”
While many people have the misconception that swimming club is only about the competition, Ms Coleman said it’s more of a family night.
“The MAAC [Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre] put on a cheap dinner, so it’s an easy and fun night for the family,” she said.
“If families want to, they can do weekend carnivals if they choose to travel.
“On Thursday nights, the main idea is to improve yourself and at the end of the season, you get points based on how you’ve improved. You also don’t need to be involved in swimming training at all – people can just come down on Thursday nights.”
Young member Matthew Coleman said the best part about swimming club is “you get to go straight from the water into the hot pools”, while Samantha Cheetham enjoys seeing how well she’s done each week and doing different strokes.
