“When you live with diabetes, there is no such thing as a day off,” she said.
“The apps give people more freedom when it comes to managing diabetes.”
Ms Antees is encouraging more people living with type one diabetes to get on board with apps like Dexcom.
The free-to-download app is compatible with all iPhone and Android devices and provides up to the minute updates on client’s sugar levels. Five people, such as Ms Antees, can access the information from any location and keep a close eye on her client’s glucose levels.

“All people have to do is wear a monitoring device that can be attached to them with a very fine filament. They only have to change it once every three days,” she said.
To encourage more people to get on board with similar breakthrough technology, Ms Antees is handing out five, free Freestyle Libre packages for people living with type one diabetes.
The dietitian only asks for access to clients’ results in a two week window, for further study on how this kind of technology can benefit the NDSS.
The Freestyle Libre package trades in the usual lancet testing contraption for a non invasive patch.
“Pricking your finger as many as eight times a day can leave your fingers feeling very sore,” Ms Antees said.
“Instead, you can put a patch on your arm and use a scanner to measure your glucose levels.”
Ms Antees noted that a resident at Fairview was already using the device, and the difference was remarkable.
“Normally they would be woken up in the middle of the night to have a blood test. But now staff [at Fairview] can scan the patch and get the same results without waking up the resident.”
