“I was a little worried that the cakes wouldn’t sell, but within an hour of posting on Facebook, all the cakes were gone,” Subway’s Amy Esma-lou said.
The local Subway store hosted the Bake Stall in line with RSPCA Cupcake Day.
Bake stalls were set up across the country, with the proceeds to donated to the RSPCA in a bid to help the animal welfare organisation rescue. According to RSPCA, 135,000 animals pass through its shelter every year.
Amy baked 100 cupcakes and decorated each one herself, with popular designs including the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street.
“Baking the cupcakes took up all the spare time I had,” she said.
The effort was well worth the hours of baking, after the stall hauled in $200.
Amy is a self-declared animal lover and said she was overjoyed at the community support.
“I am very passionate about animals. We [my family and I] have a dog and cockatoo that we look after. When you live in the country, people really care for their pets and they look out for each other,” she said.
While the money raised will go to the RSPCA, Amy pointed out animals on farms also needed to be accounted for, especially in the time of drought.
“They’re just dying on the farm: there’s not enough water or food for them. The farmers can’t afford to buy the food. It’s getting out of hand, and the community needs to get behind them.”
Amy said she had already started to iron out plans for another cake stall, this time with a local grab.
“Maybe we’ll combine it with a breakfast. The money will be sent straight to the farmers in our community. We want to give directly to our community.”
