Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said the funding recognises the importance of the Newell Highway as a corridor of commerce.

“The Newell Highway is the longest highway in New South Wales, and provides a major freight and passenger transport connection to Victoria and Queensland,” Mr McCormack said.

“Many towns, farmers and small businesses throughout the Central West, Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and western NSW rely on the Newell to connect product from paddock to plate, as well as to provide a vital economic boost to communities along the highway.

“Partnering with the NSW Liberal and Nationals’ Government, we want to work with communities along the Newell to see how we can ensure it continues to be the lifeblood of the region, as well as ensuring those who use it can get home sooner and safer.

“This study will identify and prioritise the key upgrades required on the Newell Highway which increase productivity for freight operators and improve safety for all road users.”

Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment and Member for the Parkes electorate, Mark Coulton said the study will provide valuable insights to pave the way for Newell Highway upgrades.

“The Newell Highway provides a vital transport connection for communities right across my electorate,” Mr Coulton said.

“This study will investigate opportunities to better coordinate the highway with rail operations, building on the far-reaching social and economic benefits of Inland Rail.

“As a local MP, I am excited about the local job creation and investment opportunities Inland Rail will provide, including to farmers and regional businesses.

“And as Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, I can see the pathways it allows for new and improved export.”

The Australian Government is fully funding the $2 million study.
