During the National Rail Safety Week this week, Moree Plains Shire Council is promoting safety around rail corridors and urging members of the public to take responsibility for their actions at rail stations, pedestrian and level crossings.

Council’s executive projects manager John Carleton said the Rail Safety Awareness draws attention to the types of behaviours that could lead to incidents on the rail network, including looking at device screens, wearing earphones or taking shortcuts across tracks.
“As the Moree rail station runs parallel to the Moree bypass, it is particularly important that people conscientiously assess their environment, looking for trains and road traffic, rather than being preoccupied with devices,” he said.
“Train movements have also increased on the Moree to Inverell rail line at the Tycannah Street level crossing and drivers should STOP on approaching the level crossing and look to ensure that a train is not approaching before crossing over.”

Our rural residents and farmers should also be aware of the importance of rail safety when carrying out their activities and be mindful of rail crossings, particularly as many do not have lights.
“Together we can make a difference and reduce the number of incidents happening on our rail network – rail safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Mr Carleton said.
