Applications are now open for students aged from Year 7-10 as well as those interested in vocational training to follow in Ella’s footsteps who, despite obstacles, managed to go on to a distinguished career in Health Services.
To apply, students need to write a one-page letter in their own handwriting detailing the following: (a) Why I want to learn, and (b) where I have set myself a goal and achieved it.
When formulating their responses, students should look to Ella’s example. Without school, nursing was the only in-service training available for Ella. (No longer possible as Nursing entry now requires a solid HSC grade.) With school, Ella’s talents for design, food or economics would have been realised.

When reading through applications, the selection panel will seek to find entrants with Ella’s own “yearning” for learning, with this not necessarily being linked to past academic grades. The letters will be judged for coherency, as well as vision and attitude as entrants outline a goal they have achieved. The financial situation of the scholarship recipient will not be taken into consideration.
Applications need to be sent to the Lions Club of Moree (PO Box 119, Moree NSW 2400) by August 6 2018. The selection panel will then shortlist candidates and meet with them from August 6-10.
Winners will be announced at the Lions’ 2018 Scholarship Award Dinner will be Thursday evening, August 16. Recipients will each receive $1,000 for the school year.
