Last week year 10 student Kiara Smith was the only Moree girl to play for the North West side in the NSW CHS open girls touch football carnival.
Teams from all over the state competed in the carnival, held in Wagga Wagga from Tuesday, June 26 to Thursday, June 28.
Each team played about three or four games per day, and although the North West side didn’t make the finals, Moree Secondary College’s senior leader community engagement Janine French said they played well.

“They won a few games; they did pretty good against the city teams which seemed to be dominating,” she said.
This was the highest level of competition Kiara has played since she was in year since and represented the North West.
“It made me nervous,” the 16-year-old said.
“It was hard, challenging – there were a lot of other experienced players down there.”
Despite the nerves, Kiara said she played “pretty good”.
“I stepped up a bit from only playing here in Moree to playing with new people,” she said.
Meanwhile, three of Kiara’s cousins – Dwayne, Daniel (twins in year 10) and their cousin Adrian Smith (in year 11) – represented Moree in the North West boys side, which played at the NSW CHS open boys touch football carnival in Bateau Bay from Tuesday, July 3 to Thursday, July 5.
Dwayne and Daniel’s mum and Adrian’s aunty Tania Porter said the North West side went well, despite not winning any games.
“They went really good,” she said.
“They’d get beat by only one or two points.”
Adrian was named North West’s players’ player.
“He did well,” Ms Porter said.
“They all played awesome.”
