From Monday, June 25 to Friday, June 29 I’ve been fortunate enough to gain an experience that definitely will stay with me for a lifetime.
It’s rare that they do, but this week textbooks and homework have taken the backseat as I’ve shadowed journalists Sophie Harris and Aidan Wondracz from the Moree Champion during a week of work experience.

This past week my classroom has expanded to our community and although I’m a local girl, everyday I’ve learnt new and valuable things about my hometown Moree.
Through guidance and help from Sophie and Aidan my grasp of journalism has transformed from idea to reality. Now with experience out in the field under my belt, the ropes of journalism have become something more than just an explanation on university websites.
During my time I’ve had the opportunity to cover stories such as: Coles Click and Collect, Patty, Grace, Jessica, Lilly and Maria on their work experience placements as well as have a go behind the camera for others.
I even spent some time with sales representative Glenda, learning the ins and outs of advertisement, not to mention having my mind blown when I realised the ads have clocked up more travel mileage than me, being created all the way over in India.
Gaining an insight into the work behind the paper that I’ve read twice a week for as long as I can remember was an amazing experience that I’d recommend to anyone and everyone.
I’d like to thank both Sophie and Aidan for taking me in and allowing me the opportunity to experience something that down the road I can see myself doing as a career.
As my last few hours at the Champion draw to a close I’m sad to say my time is coming to an end.
And, despite a whole week of practice, this lefty still hasn’t adjusted to writing in a spiral notebook.
