In June 2017, local Federal members and the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network made a joint announcement that Headspace Tamworth would be funded to provide outreach services in Armidale, Gunnedah, Moree and Narrabri.
After 12 months of planning and refurbishment, services will commence on Monday July 2.

“We’re excited about being able to provide these exceptional programs and services to the young people in these towns,” Centacare NENW CEO Fergus Fitzsimons said.
“Centacare is focused on helping young people achieve their goals and we welcome the opportunity provided through this federal funding to expand the exceptional services of headspace Tamworth to Armidale, Gunnedah, Moree and Narrabri.”
Headspace outreach services will provide specialist mental health services for young people aged 12 to 25 years, with an early intervention focus.
The headspace model is based on an easy-to-use, enhanced primary care service that works in an integrated way to meet the needs of young people who have developed a disruption of their physical, emotional and or social well-being.
Headspace outreach services in each of these 4 locations will be free for young people, open to self referral and cultural appropriate, making it easier for young people to access necessary mental health support.
Headspace Tamworth has had a positive impact on the wellbeing of young people in and around Tamworth since the centre opened its doors in February 2013.
Providing early intervention services for young people aged 12-25 who are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms that are impacting on the quality of their lives, the staff at the centre held 4,011 sessions with young people during the 2017 financial year, and just under 12,000 sessions in the three years ending 30 June 2017.
At each of the 4 sites Headspace Tamworth has partnered with Beyond Blue to deliver the New Access model of care.
This program is an evidence based program that fits uniquely into the early intervention aims of headspace and provides young people with flexibility around the delivery of services.
“The New Access model provides young people with a choice regarding how their services are delivered – face to face in our offices, over the phone, or via a video link up. We believe this flexibility will appeal to young people busy with school, work, home life and friends,” Centre manager for the outreach sites Azaan Vhora said.
Each site will open their doors for service delivery from July 2, 2018.
Any young person wishing to access services in their town can contact Headspace Tamworth on (02) 6762 9290 regarding the referral process.
