“We should all be aware of what signs to look out for to tell if someone is struggling with mental health issues,” he said.
For this year’s men’s health week, the Australian Men’s Shed Association is shedding light on the importance of the health and well-being of dads in our communities and encouraging them to make positive changes for healthier communities.

Peter admitted that while men were generally aware of the importance of mental well-being, they still had a difficult time opening up about their feelings.
“I have bottled up my emotions in some cases. There are certain things I won’t share, just the same way you won’t share some things about your life. I just don’t want everyone to know all my problems.”
The health week has put particular focus on the different ways families can support the well-being of men and boys. While Peter said he has not struggled with mental health issues, he has leaned on family members in the past during hard times.
“I didn’t have any problem that I couldn’t speak about to my wife. She was always there for me,” he said.
Though, it’s a known reality that many men might not have that same kind of pillar of strength to fall back on. Such was the case for Peter when he lost his beloved wife Maureen.
The pain and grief for Peter is even more acute as the couple’s wedding anniversary looms ahead.
“On June 18, it will mark 52 years of marriage,” he said.
The day afterwards will mark 11 years since his wife’s passing.
As Peter explained, it was the support from members of the wider community that has helped him through his hard times.
“There’s one friend I can speak to since the passing of my wife. She has been a pillar of strength. She has been most supportive of my idiosyncrasies. If I have a bad day, she will listen to what I’ve got to say,” he said.
It’s the kind of example that illustrates one doesn’t have to look very far in Moree to find family. It only takes one person who is willing to listen, to make the difference in someone’s life.
Peter said the local Men’s Shed are always on the lookout for new members, and anyone interested in joining a good cause is welcome to swing by the club’s place at the showgrounds.
