A plume of black smoke was seen billowing from the bushland along the Mehi River on the Gwydir Highway, just behind the Mehi River Van Park.
Moree Fire and Rescue retained firefighters quickly attended the scene before being joined by their RFS colleagues to extinguish the blaze.
Moree Fire and Rescue station officer Stephen Hitchcock said the fire was coming from a car in the bush towards the river.
“We believe it may have been there for sometime,” he said.
“I have no idea how it started.”
Mr Hitchcock said the blaze was under control.
