This year the Ladies Day committee has chosen to support the Oncology Unit at Moree Hospital to assist in purchasing much-needed equipment which will go towards improving the health outcomes for patients in Moree.
“We decided to choose somewhere local this year,” committee member Nicole Youngberry said.
“Last year we supported the Black Dog Institute which was really worthy but this year we wanted to make sure the money that we were raising through local businesses was going back into the community.
“Being ladies day, we were thinking about breast cancer and other cancer services.
“We approached the Oncology Unit and had discussions with them about whether they can use some funds.”

The unit has given the Ladies Day committee a wish list which includes ice gloves, a computer on wheels for patients to use while receiving treatment, and scholarships to allow nurses to attend conferences and training.
Moree Outreach Chemotherapy and Infusion Service manager Jenny Bingham said depending on how much money is raised, she would love to see the donation go towards helping patients such as with their transport and accommodation costs.
The Outreach Chemotherapy and Infusion Service conducts about 93 treatments each month, treating not only cancer patients but people with a range of autoimmune disorders.
“Money that the community donates is so important,” acute health service manager Bronwyn Cosh said.
For example, Moree Cancer Support donated funds to help purchase equipment used to videolink with the oncologist, which patients would otherwise have to travel for.
“These are the sorts of things we do with the money, all these things enhance the service,” Ms Cosh said.
“These are significant costed items that we wouldn’t be able to afford. These extra things make it much more comfortable for patients.”
Moree Bulls president Paul King said the club is pleased to be able to support the community which supports them throughout the season.
“We try to give something back that’s going to be useful to a number of people in the community,” he said.
“It’s important that we can make it easier for people to get better healthcare.”
“It’s been quite clear to us when we were sending out sponsorship packages that this sits close to home for a number of people – businesses say they are so supportive of the oncology unit and have even increased their sponsorship because of that,” Ms Youngberry added.
Last year a total of $6,500 was raised during Ladies Day – from ticket sales, raffles, sponsorship from local businesses, the jersey auction and ladies day merchandise – but the committee are confident they can top that this year.
“We’re overwhelmed with the support we’ve received this year,” Ms Youngberry said.
“This year we’ve got about 150 more tickets than last year as we’ve allocated a bigger space and we sold out more than a month before the event; last year we were still selling them on the day.”
A total of 350 ladies are set to attend this year’s event, to be held on Saturday, June 30 when the Bulls face off against reigning premiers Tamworth Pirates in a top-of-the-table clash.
“Everyone had such a great day last year, they’re quite looking forward to this year,” Ms Youngberry said.
In addition to enjoying a great day out at the rugby, delicious food, complimentary drinks, entertainment by Jac Drenkhahn and the Benny Nelson Trio after the game, ladies can also have the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes in the standard and major raffles.
All who attend the day will also have the opportunity to bid on one of the special ladies day jerseys worn by the players, during the jersey auction following the first grade match.
