Hugh Reardon, Gilbert Tighe, Max Fernance, Darcy Brazel, Will Slack-Smith, Angus Manchee and Flynn Kirky will be competing in the under 11s state championships in Sydney, led by Moree Central North coach Dan Reardon. Harrison George was also selected but was injured in an earlier representative fixture.
Arthur Greer, Angus Reardon and Sam Lamey will represent Moree in the under 12s Central North side, competing at Camden.
Finally, Hugh Ross will be Moree’s only representative in the under 13s state championships, being held in Salamander Bay. Eddie Montgomery was also selected for the Central North side, but unfortunately broke his arm so won’t be playing this weekend.
The state championships is the highest level of competition for the under 11s, 12s and 13s grades, and Central North Junior Rugby Union vice president Rebecca Reardon said it’s an honour for these players to make it this far.
“Over 300 players tried out for the representative selection in the various age groups, hence it is very competitive and an honor to be selected,” she said.
As the under 11s state championship competition is more about the development of players, each zone is allowed two teams in the 12-a-side competition. This competition is round robin based without finals.
Meanwhile, there is only one representative team per zone in the under 12s and 13s competition which is played to win with a series of semi finals and a final on Sunday afternoon and Monday.
In the lead-up to the state championships, the under 12s and under 13s Central North sides recently competed against other representative country zone teams in the Country Championships in Armidale.
The under 13s side came second overall, going down to Illawarra in the final. The under 12s side also only lost to Illawarra by just one try, but came fourth overall.
Moree’s Angus Reardon was awarded best forward for Central North in the under 12s division.
