“This year, the golf club has had a really good turnout. Fifty percent of competitors are men, and fifty percent are ladies,” tournament director Paul Wilde said.
Around 220 golfers flooded Moree at the start of the week, having travelled from all corners of Australia such Gympie (QLD) and Sydney.
It is the 14th time the local Golf Club has hosted the tournament, which comprises of three days of Stable Ford events and one day of Four Ball Best Ball.
The tournament is only open to vet golfers. To qualify, a lady golfer must be aged 50 or over and a man golfer 55 years and over.
“Most golf clubs have vets and members. Vet golfers can run their own competition, but also compete in general member tournaments,” Vets Committee member Robert Matthews said.
Mr Matthews has been playing golf for more than 20 years. He cited the local golf course as one of the best in the region.
“The club is fortunate that the golf course was built into the natural river setting,” Mr Matthews said.
The lifetime golfer says the natural hillocks and dips in the green is an attractive feature in the general flatness of Moree Plains.
“The club buys the water to keep the 100 acres of land beautiful, green and manicured. Everything you see is maintained by its members. The cement path that runs through the course was put in by the vets. The members work together for the benefit of the club.”
Mr Matthews said even the visiting golfers shared in his admiration of the course.
“Golfers are already booking accommodation for next year’s event.”
