Goondiwindi Senior Rugby League will host their third annual knockout where teams compete for $14,000 in prize money and the ultimate bragging rights.

Eight teams from NSW and QLD will face each other during the action-packed day where 22 games will be played in total.

East Moree, Dallas Green Memorial, Walgett and Kamilaroi Brothers have a mix of the Moree region’s best rugby league stars and are nominated to play for NSW.

Teams have been training for weeks in preparation for Saturday’s knockout, which was last year won by the Newcastle All Blacks.

Goondiwindi Senior Rugby League president Tony Carter described the quality of football on display as extremely competitive.

“Because the prize money is so high, teams are in it to win it. There’s no garbage; it’s just quality football,” he said.

The winning team will take home $14,000, while runners up will received $2000. The elimination finalists, who lose the first game of the day will have a chance to win back their $1000.

Each team will bring a squad of 25 men to play a full-days worth of 20-minute half games.

Carter said it was good to see so many teams from the Moree region enter the competition.

Usually the competition is played in January, however orgainser hoped an event in February would allow for cooler weather.

Unfortunately, that will not be the case this year as Saturday’s predicted to reach 38 degrees. Carter encouraged supporter from each team’s hometown to head to Goondiwindi for the day.
