The long-term staff member, and long serving deputy principal, of Moree Public School has been honoured with the title for being a driving force to provide extra curricular activities to all students, equally.
Nominated beside Jim Crawford, Michael Ivanov, Chris Binge, Maureen Carrigan and Barrie Brooks Lindy was humbled to be named the award recipient.
“I’d like to say thank you and congratulations to my fellow nominees who are wonderful members of the community and do so much to make Moree a better place,” she said.
Lindy encourages students to be active members of the community and has a positive understanding of the school’s role within Moree.
She herself is a member of the Moree Caledonian Society Pipes and Drums and a past organiser of pony clubs. Moree Public School’s extra curricular activities include the choir, highland dance group, horse sports, multi-cultural public speaking, scripture, inter-school cultural visits, legends of league and much more.
Meanwhile, Meals on Wheels received the Volunteer/Sports Group of the Year for delivering meals to aged and disabled residents, and their carers, for the past 60 years.
With every delivery Moree’s MoW volunteers provide companionship and a friendly face, as well as a nutritious meal.
Moree Cricket Club president David Watts took out Volunteer of the Year for his tireless work during the past 24 months to improve cricket facilities in Moree, benefiting both junior and senior clubs.
David almost single-handedly facilitated the establishment of a new turf pitch and white picket fence at Ron Harborne Oval, as well as organising a fundraising dinner at the Max Centre, boasting not one but four celebrity guests.
He applied for grants, liaised with Moree Plains Shire Council, negotiated with contractors and kept the Moree Junior Cricket Club parents involved during the process.
Local golfer Breanna Purse was named sportsperson of the year.
Bree has represented Moree in the highest levels of golf since starting her career through Moree Junior Golf at the age of six.
She played local junior opens, NSW junior opens, Australia Junior opens and was the youngest player to win the north west and western district open ladies tournament in 2015, and again in 2017.
She has been a past winner of the north region Jack Newton Order of Merit holding many junior open titles in her career. She’s also the current junior north west champion. Breanna has also played golf at the highest school level for the past two years.
Named in the all-schools state honours team for 2016 and 2017, she has won the Jack Newton NSW state age net 16 years 2016-17 and won a silver medal at the Australian Age Titles in 2015.
She then went one better with a gold medal in 2017. Bree has received an invitation to play golf at Moore Park Golf Club in Sydney in the 2018 NSW Women’s Major Metropolitan Pennant as their number two player.
Magic on the Mehi received Community Event/Group of the Year. The three day festival of music, poetry and comedy provided an opportunity for local children and Moree’s bands to perform.
The event was not only a draw card for a number of celebrities but an opportunity for businesses to sponsor an event which saw proceeds directly assisting the local community.
Finally, Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Eda Kucukozmen.
The local achiever is a great role model for the youth of today and her achievements include being a finalist for Reconciliation Week, chairing highland dancing, winning at the Narrabri Eisteddfod, performing at Relay for Life in 2016, being named 2016 non-indigenous youth of the year and much more.
