Camille Maunder, 11, and Lauren Appleby, 10, qualified for the four-day event after travelling to 12 tournaments, including last month’s Champion of Champions; and accumulating enough points to represent the north-west region.
“It’s quite an awesome achievement to get this far,” Moree tennis club coach Margie Buckley said. “They’ve worked all year to make it to where they are.”
While it will be the first JDS state final for Lauren, it is the second time for Camille who played in last year’s event.
Six NSW country regions are represented at the tournament by players who are grouped into ages 10/U, 12/U, 14/U and 16/U.
Each age group has a total of 24 players who are divided into four pools. The winners of each pool progress to the play-offs which determine the ultimate NSW JDS Country Champion.
Mrs Buckely said Camille and Lauren have been preparing by playing against adults as well as their own age groups.
“They’re really pushing themselves. I’m so proud of them and wish them the best of luck,” she said.
The JDS State Final will run from Friday November 17 to Monday November 20. Results will be posted as each match is played at tournament.tennis.com.au
