Moree's Danella Sweeney attends Finance Academy

During the school holidays, Moree’s Danella Sweeney attended the prestigious UBS Finance Academy in Sydney.

She was one of 40 Year 11 students from across the state chosen to attend the week after showing an interest in finance at Moree Secondary College.

“After submitting my CV, a principals letter of recommendation and my own letter outlining why I wanted to attend I received an email saying I was successful,” she said.

From July 10 to 13 Danella and her peers gained a first-hand insight into financial markets, the operations of a bank and the many career paths open to them, some of which they previously wouldn’t know existed.

They also met key industry players as well as gain a practical and working knowledge of financial markets via workshops, mock case studies and a visit to UBS’s trading floor.

Students were placed in groups and were asked to work on a major presentation during the week, to later share their findings with UBS representatives.

“The major presentation was based around mergers and acquisitions,” she said.

Overall, Danella said the experience confirmed her interest in accounts and banking as a future career path.

“I learned heaps especially with Moree being such a rural place. It was such a great opportunity to visit UBS Finance Academy and hear from all these different people,” she said.

Danella was humbled to be chosen for the opportunity and recommended it to other local students who shared her interest.

“If the opportunity comes around, any Year 11 students with an interest in finance should apply.” This year marked the 15th anniversary of the finance academy.
