Featuring works by eight emerging and established artists, Yeladu! celebrates the diversity of Kamilaroi art with works documenting artists’ lived experience as proud Kamoilaroi people working throughout Australia.
It includes a range of practical disciplines with a focus on film-based media.
The exhibition features the work of two local Moree artists Liz Munro and Ann Johnson.
Their works will be displayed alongside nationally renowned artists including Richard Bell, Aroha Groves, Jonathan Jones, Archie Moore, Reko Rennie, Warraba Weatherall and the Warrambool Weavers.
We are thrilled to be part of NAIDOC week once again, particularly as this exhibition truly celebrates Kamilaroi visual culture.
- Hannah Williamson, Moree Plains Gallery curator
Curator Hannah Williamson is particularly excited to unveil a newly commissioned work by artist-in-residence Warraba Weatherall.
“Warraba’s artistic practice has its roots in street art and for this exhibition he will paint a massive five metre wide mural on the gallery walls,” she said.
“It will be very impactful in our historic building.”
In addition to his residency at the gallery, Weatherall will be conducting a public program with students at Moree Secondary College.
For this project the artist will work with students to design and paint a large artwork on the grounds of Moree Secondary College’s Albert Street campus.
The exhibition’s opening event is part of the official NAIDOC week calendar.
“We are thrilled to be part of NAIDOC week once again, particularly as this exhibition truly celebrates Kamilaroi visual culture,” Miss Williamson said.
“I hope to see both familiar and new faces at the opening to commemorate the occasion.”
Yeladu! Kamilaroi art today is open from 6pm Friday 7 July.
All are welcome to this free event.
The exhibition will run from July 7 to September 2.
